DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi Manor House,

Have a query on behalf of friend just starting selling books. Afraid I'm not much use on this one:

She has A Pocket Book of Butterflies and Moths by Webb. The dustjacket is illustrated with insects but -and here's the query - the inside of the dustjacket is printed with Robin Hood!

Any ideas. Would it diminish or increase its worth?

Thanks very much.

Correction: Charles Hall, not Webb.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

As the experts are continually telling us, book collecting is not philately. Production errors and eccentricities do tend to devalue books.

The only Robin Hood book published by A&C Black I can find is "The Story of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men" by John Finnemore, illustrated by Stoddart, 1925. So I am presuming that they had some left over, and they printed some on the other side of the paper.

As you no doubt know, this book was in print over a long period, and is a very common title, so has no great rarity value.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi Manor_House. I put a book on yesterday - In the Name of Rome for £1.99 with a buy it now for £4.99. A rather splendid book in fine condition. Someone placed a bid at £1.99 and the BIN disappeared. Is this par for the course? I checked my account and sure enough I have a listing fee of 20p plus 5p for BIN.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hello Pat,

Just in case Manor House is out watching fireworks, this is one I can answer for you: if you put on a BIN with an auction price, the first bid negates the BIN.

Hello Cristo - thanks for that. Talk about learning something new every day. D... and blast it. It is such a super book I just hope someone else puts in a bid. The thought of letting it go for £1.99!!!!!!!!

Why did you put an auction price on it, Pat? Why not just a BIN?

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I will join the pair of you - I hate most of those days. The only people to gain from these soap-operas are the card manufacturers and the florists.

We are brain-washed into thinking that we must send cards and flowers on every occasion known to man. WHY?

I don't want flowers that wilt in the central heating or cards that have been bought willy-nilly. What I really cherish are those hand-written notes of thanks or appreciation. I know that someone has taken the time to sit, lift pen and paper and say 'thankyou'. Now, that really does make my day. Back to the books.

... and what is Up-Helly-Aa all about? Just joshing. 😄

Hallowe'en is the Eve of All Hallows, or All Saints - as you all know. Did you not do apple-bobbing, Lordship? We did; with the carpet covered with towels.

Who hi-jacked this thread? X-(

BTW, while I'm here, - I appear to have a nice little bidding war going. It'll probably stop, now.

... and take a look at the last 20 seconds of Fine's auction, yesterday.
