Asked by an agent to read out a OTP over the phone

I've just had customer support call me (after multiple failed attempts to use their automated assistant to resolve an issue with a return where the seller is failing to cover the postage) and after asking me for the order number they've triggered a 6 digit OTP code to my phone and asked me to read it back to them over the phone.  Is this expected?  I refused to do so and asked for a conversation with their manager (which apparently I have to wait 48 hours for a manager to call me back), as reading an OTP to someone over the phone who has called *you* is a very common scam technique.  I'm 90% sure I was speaking to eBay as I requested the call, but reading an OTP to them over the phone shouldn't be necessary.

You were right to be suspicious.

most companies state never to share your OTP with someone over the phone and it is certainly possible it was a scam call.

If you can see the number that called you can Google it and see if it’s eBay I think

It's possible to fake the caller ID so I wouldn't be keen to rely on this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caller_ID_spoofing

Ebay do sometimes use an OTP when you call CS so they can verify your account. I have used this with no issues.

If you are unsure because they phoned you, then call them up yourself and then you can give them the code if they ask for it.

It's ridiculous because they called me on my number, so what is the added benefit of them texting me on the same number? Also all their other messages say "do not share this code" except for the one I got whilst on the call which is literally just 6 numbers. If that's the intended process it seriously needs rethinking!
