Accepted an offer on my item but bidding stayed open and someone else won

I accepted an offer on my item which then showed that it was awaiting payment, but I then noticed my item auction was still live, and ended up with someone else bidding on it just before the end of the listing, for £15 less than the offer price previously. when I now check the offer status it says declined, how can this be? I'm now £15 down and the information ebay lists about the offer appears to be false and i end up feeling like I've been scammed by ebay theselves ! anyone any idea why this might be? I can't get through to any customer support either 😞

From what iv'e seen recently if i make an offer and the seller accepts the item isn't mine until iv'e actually paid for it.

It's crazy, that's the whole point of accepting an offer, you expect it to be honoured but ebay just cancels it if there's another bid on the item.
