Wrong item returned

Hi folks, recently sold a mobile to a bidder, when they received it they reported it as not working, which I thought was strange, however I agreed a refund and put the process in motion, today I received the returned item, which was not the same phone which is easy to confirm as I've still got the original listing photos to compare against. I've sent a message to the buyer via eBay stating this and not sure what to do now, the money is still held in PayPal, but apart from messaging the buyer what do I need to do, do I need to contact eBay and if so how?, cheers,

Sadly, this is the very reason i advice people not to sell expensive things on ebay, especially phones, because this happens more than you know, buy a working phone because theirs is knackered, open a return and send back their faulty phone instead of the one you sent, they get a working phone AND their money back.

For legal reasons i will add that may not be the case here and may be a genuine mistake, but either way, unless the other guys can help, i rather fear you`ve lost your money and the phone, because Ebays process for returns is automatted and even if you ring them, they may argue that you can`t  prove they sent a different item back, anymore than the buyer can prove they did`nt.

i appreciate you have a photo/s from your listing, but sadly Ebay may argue you can take a photo of a phone anywhere, HOWEVER, it`s not going to hurt giving ebay a ring, explain the situation and see what they say.
