How can I stop ebay from altering my listings to allow offers?
In addition to the advice that you have already been given, if you use the Advanced Selling Form then you can use eBay's Best Offer function so that it works to your advantage, not eBay's, and it doesn't even involve doing anything that would result in you breaching any of eBay's terms and conditions.
If you were interested in trying it what you do when you're setting up a Buy It Now listing is to set the Buy It Now price so that it's much higher than the price you actually wanted. That way even after eBay and PayPal take their cut of an item sold via the Buy It Now price you still get more money in your own pocket. However, to make the Best Offer function work to your advantage activate it on the listing and in the section where it says "Automatically Accept Offers Equal To, Or Above..." enter the amount that you were initially going to enter as your Buy It Now price. Once you've done that go to the section that says "Automatically Reject Offers Equal To, Or Below..." and enter an amount that is 1p below the amount that you put in the "Automatically Accept Offers Equal To, Or Above..." box. By doing this any offers that do not meet the minimum amount that you would be prepared to accept would be automatically rejected without the offer even getting through to you, whereas if somebody made an offer that was equal to, or higher than, the minimum amount you'd set the listing up to accept on your behalf the Best Offer would be automatically accepted, which only leaves the buyer to make payment.
In the event that you leave a gap between the minimum pride to accept and the maximum pride to reject then any offers that fall into that grey area would need to be considered manually. If you did end up in this scenario then you have one of three options, the first being to accept the offer, the second being to make a counteroffer and the third being to reject the offer. If you had offers like this pending a decision but somebody either made a Best Offer that fell within the acceptable limits that you'd be willing to sell it for, or if somebody committed to buying the item via the Buy It Now option, then any pending offers awaiting a manual review would be automatically cancelled, as the item would no longer be available for sale.
If you still don't like the thought of having the Best Offer function on your listings then just don't bother activating the Best Offer function on the Advanced Selling Form and that way any potential buyers will either have to pay the Buy It Now price or find a cheaper item if they feel that the asking price is too high.
You need to change from the 'basic' listing form to the 'advanced' listing form. It gives you more control.
