It could have been damaged in the post. If so, it's up to you to refund in full, either straight away if the item is so damaged that it's not worth paying to get it back, or on receipt if you want it back, and to then lodge a claim for damage in transit with the carrier.

Whatever, Ebay have no idea what you actually sent, or what condition it was in when sent or received, as they were not present when sent or received, so have no choice but to accept a buyer's word for it when they claim Not As Described, as per their Money Back Guarantee.  They cannot get into disputes between you and a buyer.  Only a judge can decide if a buyer is a liar or scammer.

You agreed to comply with the MBG when you registered your account. If you dig your heels in and refuse to offer refund on return, Ebay will either force you to pay for a returns label, or they will force the refund without the need for return, as it seems they've done here. You will also have had a damaging defect slapped on your account for failing to comply.

This may all sound unfair, but it's the fairest it can possibly be.  The MBG is a very good thing (although you may not think that at present) as it gives buyers the confidence to shop with you and every other Ebay seller.  Without it, you'd be lucky to sell anything at all. In fact, without it, Ebay would no longer exist.

Once you've agreed the return, you have to refund on receipt, and then report the buyer to Ebay for abusing the MBG by fraudulently claiming Not As Described (via the 'report' button on your ‘leave feedback’ page) if that is indeed what they have done. A few of those from different sellers, and their account will soon be toast. And add their Ebay ID and PayPal email address to your Blocked Bidders List so they can’t darken your doorway again.

The entire system is automated. No Ebay human ever sets eyes on a return request or case (impossible due to their billions of members, and the huge numbers of return requests or cases that naturally generates). As you failed to comply with the MBG, ie. did not indicate that you would refund on return, the system 'assumed' that you did not want the item back, and auto-refunded the buyer when they escalated the case. If you want the item back, you will have to send the buyer a postage label. You can buy one from any carrier online and email it to them. If they don't use it, you can cancel the label to get a postage refund. You can also take legal action against the buyer if you wish, to either get the item or your money back. But it isn't something Ebay can help you with.

EBay's policy is that when they can't determine that an item was as described, they will take the buyer's word for damage or faults. As they never even see the item, and don't know what condition it reached the buyer in, cases are almost always found in the buyer's favour.

There's no point in disputing this, you just have to accept the return and send the buyer a prepaid return label if you want an item back. If you don't, eBay will enforce a refund and the buyer won't have to return the item.

This is all covered in eBay's money back guarantee policy, which you accepted in the user agreement.
