Over a month ago My selling account was suspended for a month because my seller rating had dropped to below standard through no fault of my own. An item is stuck in the postal system over which I have no control, this time has now passed.
I am only allowed to list ONE ITEM for sale!
How am I supposed to increase my rating if I can only sell one item a month?

You are not the only one to report this. ebay can punish business sellers who go below standard by adding extra percentages to their fees. As private sellers now sell for free ebay has had to do something else and it appears to be restricting the ability to list. How many listings did you used to have?

Just one late delivery would not have resulted in your seller performance rating dropping. Have you looked at your seller dashboard?
By restricting your listings Ebay has essentially ended your ability to use their site without actually banning you, although your percentage can only get worse and may lead to a ban in the end anyway.
That's a lot of personal camera equipment you were selling, perhaps sell your collection at an auction house instead?

It does seem weird this has happened for just the one issue.
I don't suppose there are any emails in your junk folder from eBay questioning whether you are using the correct type of account and strongly encouraging you to sell your camera bits on what they call a 'business' account. They were doing this a while back to some sellers listing many items on a 'private' account.
If it is just your collection you no longer want to keep to use, then this 'private' account is correct.
However you did say it was because you had dropped to below standard. So a strange one really.

Check your Seller Dashboard and Seller Metrics Dashboard via the buttons on the guidance page I've linked to below:
Copy and paste your stats here.

Could this be one of ebay's metrics where business sellers / high volume sellers are evaluated on percentages, but private or low volume sellers are evaluated over a rolling 12 month period and are only allowed a certain number within the last 12 months ?
The item stuck in the post might be the only one now but there might be more 'defects' spread over the past 11 months leading to the restriction.
If that's so then, if I remember correctly the restriction will be lifted as the months roll on, the earlier defects drop off and you return to Above Average?
I used to stop selling over Christmas and New Year because as a low volume seller I was only allowed about 5 defects over the 12 month evaluation period and it seemed risky to collect several at Christmas.

It seems to be a very harsh way to deal with being below standard, particularly with low volume sellers. Telling sellers to improve their standards whilst almost entirely removing the ability to do so seems, on the face of it, to be disproportionate. I understand ebay has a duty to protect other users, but is this really the way to do it?

It would be useful if @silvercycleboy could tell us what their Seller Dashboard is showing, there may be more issues that they're unaware of.
