Royal Mail 48 tracked compensation for damage

Anyone know if Royal Mail have a list of items that you cant get compensated for if damaged in transit? I have recently had to refund two items that were damed by UPS and EVri and didnt know about their list of items that you cant claim for if damaged..! Now i'm really wary of sending anything by courier/post! Thanks in adance

Every courier has a non compensation list. Just search the company name and non compensation and they will all come up.

Royal Mail have a listed of restricted items, any of those wouldn't be covered.

 

Evri, it seems, manage to wriggle out of covering practically anything once you read their list and small print.

 

Are you talking about a specific type of item here? Some will only be covered by Royal Mail if you use the correct postage method, such as Special Delivery.

Haven't used them for years but didn't Evri once include the rather hilarious 'All Electrical Items' as a blanket insurance worthless-making restriction?

Although there's nothing you can do about the matter if your item happens to get lobbed into the back of a van rather than being placed into the van carefully, there are steps you can take to minimise the chances of any delicate items from ending up getting damaged in transit.

 

Let's say for example that you've just sold that large French terracotta pot that you've currently got listed for sale at the time of typing this response.  When you come to pack it up, use a double-walled cardboard box for maximum protection, making sure that you pack out the insides with polystyrene foam to absorb any knocks during transit, and fill up any remaining gaps around the pot with bubblewrap so as to prevent the item from moving around in transit.  Just to be on the safe side, pack out the inside of the terracotta pot with bubblewrap as well.

 

Once you've finished packing out the parcel, tape it up tightly with the type of red and white tape that has the word "Fragile" printed across the tape in bold red letters so as to make it absolutely clear to the person handling the item that it needs to be handled with care.  Although there is no guarantee that this will prevent the item from getting chucked around during transit, by attempting to make the packaging as bulletproof as possible and drawing attention to the fact that it is a fragile item, it should help to minimise the chances of the item getting damaged in transit, as the shock absorbing materials included in the box should help to absorb any heavy knocks that the parcel takes whilst in transit.

 

Finally, once you've found a courier you can trust check out the level of insurance available for all of their services and select the postage option that will provide you with the greatest amount of compensation in relation to the item's value in the event that something goes wrong and it does get smashed in transit.

There isn't a courier in the land that will insure a terracotta pot (ceramics) against transit damage; not even Parcelforce via their retail services. Any additional compensation purchased would therefore be a waste of money for anything other than insuring against loss.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

There are also couriers that 'handle' items more professionally and less often during the whole journey then others.

 

For example. UPS may have less hubs (or more or less spokes), so less movements, and be more automated. They don't generally have items moved from van to hub to van to private car all chucked in an old hatchback on top of each other - EVRI and (it seems to be mainly the small packets) Yodel do. Some couriers have custom fitted vans and parcels arranged on shelves or similar, others just empty unfitted transits where everything sits on the floor and gets trodden on each time there is a search for the next drop.

 

It all makes a difference. I notice the state of the boxes when different couriers have handled them. I rarely get to re-use boxes that EVRI delivered! In my business (I don't sell my trade stuff on here) I use custom boxes (£12 each!) triple wall cardboard due to the weight of the items, foam inserts etc... I can afford to because the items aren't cheap, so I also don't sell so many so can afford to spend time packing, thats fortunate). I use Parcelforce, much to some peoples horror, and have been lucky enough not to have had any serious issues...

I know this is not exactly what you are looking for, but they have a claim centre, which you can see here. You can try putting your claim there to see if your parcel/item qualifies for compensation.
