Refunded postage

I have just refunded postage to a buyer who bought 6 Lots of vintage cards.   I refunded her the excess postage as they were all posted together.   I said it was for postage refund when doing this.    Looking at the refund details of £4.15    Only £1.81 is postage £2.34 is off the purchase price?   There is money in my account to payment this.      I don’t understand why.   Can anyone explain this please?  It is not what I asked for.    I am not refunding the cost of the cards but the postage.   This seems a bit dodgy.     Where does it leave those who pay tax on sales?  I don’t, however I like to know what is a sale and what is postage just to keep everything logged.

They've done it that way as long as I can remember and yes, it does look dodgy.

As to the why, everything else I've read on here leads me to three possible outcomes.

They are inherently incompetent, or malpractice is their modus operandi or a combination of both.

I usually pick option 1.

I think, because the combined shipping feature has been removed, that the partial refund you've made has been taken from one order, the one you clicked the refund button for, which is why it's been made up of the £1.81 postage for that order and the remaining  £2.34 from the item price.
