Post to USA now stopped...

I just went to post an item to the USA (a vinyl LP), only to be told by my guy in the post office that as from today, Royal Mail are no longer accepting larger than a letter to the states!! Anyone know why please?

Many thanks

Post to USA now stopped...

Good afternoon

It is to do with the new US tariff imposed by the current Trump Administration.

Best wishes

Ok, so do you think this applies to all methods, ie evri and the like?

As per this BBC News article:

"Postal services, including Royal Mail and Germany's DHL, said they would suspend deliveries until they had proper systems in place to deal with the new rules.

Royal Mail said it was withdrawing its current US export services for businesses from Tuesday, but added it hoped to have a new system up and running within two days to allow it to comply with the new rules before they kick in."

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Whoever you use now the item is unlikely to arrive before the new rules kick in on Friday (29th). Anything sent by post will need to have the tariff/duty paid upfront which is what Royal Mail are putting into place. I believe anything sent by courier can be DDP/DAP so your buyer will likely be charged whatever tariff applies to the country of origin upon import.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Trumps tariffs.

Royal Mail plus a number of European postal authorities have stopped accepting items for the USA at the moment.

Anything arriving in the USA after the tariffs are imposed will be hit no matter the sales or sending date.

Royal Mail may launch US Postal Delivered Duties Paid on Thursday.

Just had a Royal mail email arrive - the following may help you.

"Key Points of the Executive Order and what it means for exporting goods to the USA.

If you ship goods to the USA, the following will apply on 29 August 2025:

  • The duty-free threshold (‘de minimis’) of $800 will be removed and replaced by tariffs (duties) which must be paid to US Customers and Border Protection (CBP).
  • For goods shipped via the international postal system, customs duties will be calculated using the value of the item/s and the prevailing country based (IEEPA) tariff for the item/s, depending on their country of origin (country of manufacture, not shipping).
  • If you only send personal correspondence to the USA, you are not affected by these changes. You can continue to send these items to the USA, without a customs declaration."

Doesn't matter how the item is sent the tariffs will apply.
