No more cash on collection.

Just saw the new seller rules.  I've got no issue with the reduction in free listings.  But no more cash on collection I do mind.  It means there is no way to make a buyer check on collection and once they accept it pay with no risk of them changing their mind later. 

And will buyers be happy being forced to pay up front before they see an item?

That's how I've sold any electrical equipment in the past with no issue even as there is no real consumer protection legislation for private sales, most people know this and accept it.

Some people are overthinking this and making it complicated, it's simple.

1: If you want a cash sale, sell elsewhere.

2: If you are paranoid you're going to get ripped off don't use COC.

Of course this mostly applies to Private sellers as if you're a Business not all have pick up options so it doesn't apply.

Collection is a scammers delight. They come pick up the item check it, get home and put in not as described. But they couldnt do that with cash on collection..

I also wondered why. That was until eBay announced they are launching a PayPal-esque "eBay balance".

It's obvious why eBay have done this. The aim now is to get as much money as possible in their bank collecting interest. So cash on collection is no longer a viable option for them. No cash on collection = buyer gets home puts in IND..

Yep seems so. It was a rhetorical question. I knew they'd do this.. I just didn't expect it to be instant.  I'll never sell an expensive or heavy item / items via eBay now. Simply not worth the risk.

I notice you conveniently missed out the washing machine that was mentioned in the post that you quoted, presumably as that would be more difficult for a buyer to test at the time of collection.

You are right that most items can be tested to some extent on collection but some items need a more thorough examination to evaluate properly, which often isn't possible at the time of collection, and some, for example a gas cooker, would be virtually impossible to test at the time of collection. 

Thankfully, as you say most people are honest and don't necessarily expect a refund, when buying a second hand item, if they aren't entirely satisfied.  Scammers are in the minority but sellers can be scammers just as much as buyers so it seems reasonable that buyers should get some form of protection especially when buying an item that can't easily be tested at the time of collection.

But this is neither new nor an eBay exclusive thing - (cash) buyers hoping that items such as a 2nd hand washing machine really do work as advertised have been in doubt of the true situation until long after the purchase ever since the first freeads was published in the 1950s!

This no cash thing is bizarre because it would make sense to stop fee evasion... but now... no private fees, er...

What will happen if you do accept cash on collection? There is limited mobile signal around here mine, if you are on the worng network you can't get online to pay/sort out barcodes. 

What if someone on Vodafone comes to collect something from mine & can't get on, so gives me cash instead? Do I really have to refuse them? It is so silly.

The app is not required by either buyer or seller. 

The collection code will be available to the buyer in their order details, or their order confirmation email, so if you live in area with bad reception just ask them to make a note of it before they come to collect.  You can then enter it manually on your account.

The buyer can still mark it as collected on their account as well.

Details cannot be exchanged until eBay checkout has been completed,meaning the item will have been paid before you can give contact or address details therefore no mor cash on collection.

That would be a clear breach of eBay terms which would ultimately lead to the account being restricted.

It was deliberate to see who was pedantic enough too say something, personally I wouldn't buy a Washing Machine off EB unless it could be tested on site, if others choose to then....

Our washing machine can cycle a wash in 15mins so easy to show working, want to buy it....Cash only 😎

As I did say, it's not rocket science, either stop using COC or sell elsewhere....

It's hard to admit but although the post-sales experience of FB Marketplace is usually bliss (you've bought it, great, have a nice day, bye!) the pre-sales are flipping dreadful, with so many idiots asking 'where do you live' when 'Bristol near J12 M5' is in the item title and even more telling you they have a family emergency 5 minutes before you've stayed in on a weekend for them to collect.

I haven't seen them for so long I can only assume all the free ads papers have long, long since gone to the wall?

; ) FB MP is funny but can be a good outlet for certain things, you get idiots on every platform, it comes with the nature of selling, GT works sometimes but hit and miss, for private sellers anyway, then there's always InstaG as an option which I know a few people sell through there with no problems.

Apart from the odd ball who wants to send their Mothersbrotheruncle around to collect LOL,  FB MP has been OK for me but don't use it all the time and only for certain things but I like it because it's local and people call and check stuff so never any issues. I've actually met some really nice people through FB MP which is a bonus.

Don't get me wrong, I've used FB Marketplace and also met some nice people. As you say, it seems to work better for some types of items than others. I have a rare enough 80s Fruit Machine to sell shortly, and although this type of item tends to be top dreamer / timewaster central, I think it'll have to be sold on FB!
