I realise this is going to sound daft but in the title can you try changing the name of the author from "C. G Harper" to "Harper, Charles G." and see if that makes a difference?

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

eBay UK VAT Glitch Stalls Sales With Inflated Prices Shown In Error On Some Listings

Published: Sep 2 2024 Updated: Sep 8 2024

eBay UK sellers worry about losing sales as some items show inflated prices due to glitch adding additional 20% VAT in error.

The problem has persisted for several weeks now, with eBay customer service and community staff acknowledging it's a known problem but they are unable to provide a timeline for a fix.

Over the last 12/14 hours Ive found over half my listings have increase with price (had VAT added to actual listing price).

When i go to edit a listing it shows at the price I have set but when search for it it shows it more expensive...

...Cant seem to chat any CS on auto chat or request a call back.

The few sales I have done over night have been charge at the amount I put not the extra being advertised - anyone else seem to have this?

Perfect. On the last sales day of the month. I've just checked mine and I have had vat applied to some of my listings I've also noticed that a couple of my buyers have been charged sales tax

Surely this has big tax regulation implications. This glitch should be fixed immediately

why does eBay have so many of these glitches
-

Why have all my eBay listings now have VAT added to them ? I am based in the uk and only sell my own personal used items.

I am facing the same issue. I have thousands of listings and I am not sure how many are impacted but it seems that it is a big percentage. As you understand this is impacting my sales in a negative way.

The listing has 20% VAT set in the VAT field but eBay still adds 20% on top of that. If the VAT is set at 0% the VAT is still being added.

Alarmingly, this appears to be an ongoing sporadic issue that has lasted for years as the latest problem revived an eBay UK community thread from 2022 with almost 300 previous posts from sellers impacted by the problem.

Community rep Marco replied to that thread today to acknowledge eBay is aware and working on the glitch, but had no further details to provide.
-----------------

Thanks very much for still flagging this with us. I've just checked for an update, and the team is currently working on it, and trying to resolve this as soon as possible, but I still don't have an estimated fix time. As soon I find out more about this, I will post back here to let you know.

Meanwhile, helpful sellers shared workaround suggestions, with many saying they were able edit listings individually or open their listings in the bulk editor and simply hit "save" without making any changes to trigger a revision that set the price back to what is should be without the additional incorrect VAT added - though they did warn if you use the bulk option it may take 5-10 minutes to see the changes reflected on the listings.

It looks like you moved the position of "C G Harper" rather than changing it to "Harper, Charles G."

Just to explain eBay seems to have this issue with certain authors. There was a similar thread not long ago (which I can't find now) but the answer was to change the author's name in the listing title to a different variation.

Just to be clear try changing "C G Harper" (initials followed by surname) to "Harper, Charles G." (surname followed by first name & initial). Hopefully that makes sense.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

I have; your listing 135063165836.

This is weird as it only seems to affect certain authors but not every title. I've looked at your listings and the examples from the other thread but there doesn't seem to be a common denominator. There's definitely a weird eBay glitch going on.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Ah, you're right - it is a different seller. I think it must have been a "similar item" that popped up when I was looking at your listings. However, it is the same author with VAT added for no reason at all by eBay.

It does seem to be an author-specific problem as demonstrated in the other thread.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

I'm not sure if this is what you mean but I bought a book [nothing special and about £13. Delivery by EVRI  There was VAT shown included in the delivery charge.    Delivery of Zero Rated goods [books] is also Zero Rated irrespective as to which courier is used.

It did not increase the cost to me so I became bored and did no more.

I don't know what that eBay rep is going on about with VAT being added, it can't be anything but a glitch.

If a UK registered private seller lists an item for £170 on Buy It Now, then the price it should show to buyers is £170 and the price it sells for is £170 plus the buyer protection fee (4% + 75p), VAT isn't added as soon as an item is listed.

Import VAT would be added if you have an international buyer, but you'd still see the listing price as £170 when you checked your listing, as would we.

Ebay is treating it as an international sale for some weird reason.  If you put the item in your basket and then go to checkout you will see the following message which only appears on international sales:

'VAT added to prices based on buyer location or delivery address. No additional customs charges will apply.'

All 'Buy it now' listings will show the listing price inclusive of VAT where applicable, including international sales where eBay is responsible for collecting the VAT (Note the VAT charged by eBay on international sales is Supply VAT not Import VAT as the sale to the buyer is deemed to have taken place in the UK with eBay effectively becoming the importer).

There must be a common denominator causing this glitch but I cannot see any discernable pattern to those listings affected so it is truly bizarre!

I did check to see if West Yorkshire had suddenly broken away from the UK and declared independence!
