Digital Sales Reporting

Can anyone let me know in simple terms please, what this all means?

I am just selling items from around the house that have been lying around and are no longer needed or wanted.

Granted I may have sold 30+ items and sales are in the region of £1500-2000 and I've been requested to provide my NI Number because of this.

From the information that I've read, I don't believe this is going to impact me but I am concerned about putting my NI Number on this site.

Has anyone already done this and can you put my mind at ease please.  😞

Ive given it on both this account and my private account. Makes no difference to me other than if I don’t do it, ebay will eventually apply restrictions to my account. Ive been submitting tax returns for over 20 years. As my private sales are things that are cluttering up my house (things Ive bought and no longer want or need or things inherited/passed on by relatives), there is no income tax due but there would possibly be capital gains tax if any of those items or set of items sold for £6000+. I have a lot of things stored but none as yet is worth anything like that amount. Since details are passed onto HMRC if you reach 30 items or £1700 anyway, in theory, ebay shouldn’t need it but they do ask for it as it is mentioned in the reporting rules and shows ebay is compliant to the powers that be. Im not entirely happy with it due to chance of data breaches (even more so in recent times) but to keep things running smoothly, Ive done as asked.

There are at least two threads running on this topic.  There are people who would die in a ditch rather than provide their NI number and others who see no issues.

What is clear is that if you don't provide it ebay will freeze your funds and still send HMRC the sales data.

Use the link below for information from gov.uk. This is a good place to get relevant, accurate, concise information.  There are a lot of 'experts' currently giving out a lot of misinformation in the forums here.

I gave my NI number to Ebay because I wanted to continue selling on the site.

Even if you withold your NINO, Ebay will still pass details of your sales to HMRC.

They not all sales, as I also buy a lot from eBay too and I understand that this is a recent request that they are putting in place, as previous sales, aren't part of the Digital Sales moving forward anyway.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate your message.  It's a big help and I feel much happier and think I have a better understanding now, which will hopefully result in me continuing to enjoy my eBay Account.
