How silly you can't sell a hedge trimmer or mower because it has a blade and you can't list unless you send it through age verification so collection only is out and if you have a large mower or workshop table saw  band saw ebay  say it can't be listed because it has a blade and has to posted . There are some  very intelligent  customer  advisors on Ebay and I spoke to one today that agree there needs some  investigation into this matter, if someone  collected a hedge trimmer or any other large item with a blade  two years ago they could collect, it's obviously you would ask for age verification if you felt that person was young. Has anyone else any comments on this?

All part of the every increasing Woke-Nanny-State obsessed UK policies which shall only add more and more restrictions as months and years and decades roll on by.

But then we get another Plonker such as Actor and activist Idris Elba who suggested that not all kitchen knives need a point, in order to help combat knife crime. He believes that removing the point from some knives, while still allowing them to be used for cutting food, could be an "innovative way to look at it". This suggestion has also been considered by the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

So just expect problems such as you yourself highlight, to get much worse in the future. No doubt scissors may get banned as well, and who knows where the 'Woke' of The UK shall take us all to next. It truly is crazy. Thankfully in The United States President Donald Trump has banned all that Woke madness, but don't expect this from Sir Keir Starmer, nor from the rest of the main UK political parties, as they are as equally as Woke as one another.

There was a 3 page debate about this here in the Ebay Community back in February 2025 - where there was some good comments. https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Seller-Central/Bladed-items/td-p/7790101

My advice to yourself is to Never expect Ebay to fix this issue for yourself, as it shall only get 'Worse' and never 'Better', so widen your scope and search for other places on the world-wide-web to sell mowers and  hedge trimmers who don't cause you such issues, which really shouldn't exist in the first place. But Ebay is not doing this because they want to. They are doing it because of external pressure. The type of pressure which can only increase, and soon cover a much larger area of products which can be used as a weapon to pierce human skin

Can't offer any useful advice, but I bought a cordless lawn mower on eBay 2-3 weeks ago and when browsing I noticed that some (but not all) required age verification. The firm I bought from didn't require this (thankfully, as I don't have any credit cards),  and I've just looked at his current mowers for sale - all listed in the correct lawnmower category - and none of them ask for it either. Sorry, but it's a mystery to me too why some do and others don't...

ebay are only complying with the law as written. Specifically that around 'bladed products'

"The term 'bladed product' is a term that was introduced in the OWA and is intended to cover a subset of bladed articles. It means an article with a blade that is capable of causing a serious injury to a person which involves cutting that person's skin."

This site gives a very good run down of the new laws and why ebay are doing what they are doing

Thanks for the link.  And I must say that's the first time I've ever seen 'thankfully ... Donald Trump' (has done something) in the same sentence. The guy is a total embarrassment. But if he's doing/done something to reduce 'wokeness', hats off I say.

According to the statutory guidance on the Offensive Weapons Act 2019 (from GOV.UK):

“Section 2 defines a remote sale as being where the seller or the seller’s representative was not in the presence of the buyer, and therefore includes sales which are made online, over the telephone or by post.” gov.uk+1sprotbroughandcusworthparishcouncil.gov.uk+1

This clearly only applies to remote (i.e., non‑face‑to‑face) transactions. In-person sales—like meeting someone for a collection only sale and handing over the hedge trimmer—do not fall under this definition, so no age verification is required.

The guidance continues:

“When a corrosive product is sold remotely, the seller needs to meet certain conditions…”, including age verification and adult delivery. chichestercity.gov.uk+2gov.uk+2ipo.gov.uk+2

Again, this is strictly about remote sales. The law makes no equivalent requirements for in-person exchanges between individuals.

To be clear: A collection only item involves a face to face in-person exchange between individuals. Therefore, no age verification is required. This is why Facebook marketplace and other sites are still legally continuing to allow collection only sales of hedge trimmers without age verification.

Bottom line: eBay's policy is an overreach and not legally required.

Just found this out trying to list two used corded electric hedge trimmers. I could understand if they stopped battery cordless ones being collection only. Can't remember seeing any hooded thugs attacking gang rivals with a plug in hedge trimmer in the news.

When you buy to collect on eBay, when does the transaction take place? EBay take payment before collection. Hence an age verification has to take place.

Facebook is fine as no payment occurs on the platform.

its an over reach in terms of product range, but collection orders would still need age verification now there is no cash on collection.
