Just had an interesting conversation with Ebay customer services, they use Royal Mail Tracked 48 as the default service on anything values unto £750.
Tracked only has compensation of unto £150
The advisor told me that Ebay cover the loss
hmmm...
I know people have asked but I've never seen an answer to wether anyones got the full combo back above £150

It states in the terms and conditions for SD, and a member of the Community Team has also repeatedly confirmed, that the items sellers send using SD are covered for up to £750.
The cover is for items not delivered and items damaged in transit.
Many members have already said that Ebay have compensated buyers for items which have not been received and items damaged in transit. Items do have to be adequately packaged.
Ebay compensate the buyer, not the seller who will receive the buyer's payment.

Thanks for that.
jckl1957 - big thanks!
Especially the fact that people have got compensation for lost items, I did find a few threads where people asked but got no answers - hence my ask.
Still a very strange arrangement having spoken to Royal Mail friends but if Ebay do it they do it!
As I use free postage as a seller - I do get my postage money back don't I?

No, if you use Simple Delivery labels, Ebay will charge you for the labels.
Even if postage is 'free' somebody still has to pay and, on your listings it will say 'seller pays'.
You need to make sure that you are selling your items for enough to cover postage costs which you will pay.

I don't know the answer to that.
I think it will be a case of 'wait and see'.
If it does happen, then contact Customer Services and ask the question.
Obviously, this is not your selling account so I don't know what volume of sales you are talking about. However, commenting on my own, personal experience, I am not sure that items getting lost in the post is a big issue.
This year to date, I have had zero INR cases.
Last year, I had one from 198 orders.

Just a thought ... I have them from time to time but not often.
You could shift this potential issue to Ebay and the buyer by not offering free (seller pays) postage.

Having read the replies - which I thank you all for - some have not understood the situation.
If I offer free postage as it stands with Royal Mail, it seems I as the payer of the postage do not get postage money back even though I paid for it.
So for example the customer pay £10 including postage and gets it all back
I just keep the £10 of which I have paid £3.38 for postage so make a loss of £3.38.
Royal Mail pay for the loss of the item & the postage (unlike Evri), I know this a my son works for their Customer Services.
So I will be contacting Ebay CS again - Simple Delivery is anything but simple!

Yes and no answer as Evri operate a different compensation policy to Royal Mail.

Hi jckl1957
Yes, that's one way and it did cross my mind.
I've sort of got my head around it now having contacted Ebay CS someone took the time to explain it thoroughly and the best way to explain it is as far as the seller is concerned its delivered even if its not.
I'm going off into a darkened room to meditate!
Thanks again for your patience!

Right all sorted, spoken to Ebay I get it now. It's a non-issue! I don't lose out by offering free postage.
