cant seem to increase the insurance on an item once sold using the ebay postage facility

The buyer can only pay the price you have on the listing. You can't ask for more money once the item is sold.

The time to work out pricing for postage is before you list, not after.

If you need increased cover you pay, after all it is for your protection.  You certainly cannot ask buyer to pay more.

Why ever use the inflexible ebay system, buy direct from RM or the Post Office.

Your listing states you are sending with Royal Mail Tracked 24,this service has maximum compensation of £150 you cannot increase it,you will need to change the service to Special Delivery Guaranteed or choose another courier and let the buyer know.

Yes that what i did,i find the ebay system a bit clunky...
