Hello - I used to sell professionally (many years ago) and a lot of things have changed - when I listed my items last week, I offered them under 'Vintage jewellery' as I always have as they are considered vintage but they are 9ct gold. I have never sent any gold items other than with Special Delivery as I believe this is the only way RM is going to compensate me if the package gets lost or damaged. When I listed, I was only offered 'Simple Delivery' because my items are pricey but how is that going to work? I am not comfortable at all sending gold items other than Special Delivery... I must admit that I didn't really ask myself those question when I listed but now that I am faced with sending 2 of them, I am starting to worry.
Have you got any experience about Simple Delivery and gold items? I know it's fairly new...
Many thanks! Veronique

There was a similar question the other day:

I think this is one for the Community Team to clarify.
Jewellery sellers of pricey items or jewellery sets etc. now have to use Simple Delivery but Ebay Ts & Cs still say that valuables, including gold and silver are not covered.
Can you help?

OK - I've just called eBay customer service with the question and I was passed to a 2nd level CS agent who was extremely helpful so I am passing on all info on here so it can help others.
If you are selling gold or silver (or I expect other valuable metals like platinum) jewellery/items, you NEED to list them under a category that states gold or silver - in my case, I had chosen Vintage jewellery because this is the way I used to sell my vintage items but nowadays, I would need to sell them under Fine jewellery, making sure the category states gold or silver - in that case, you are given the option to opt out of Simple Delivery and choose your own (in my case Special Delivery with RM as I have had problems with EVRI recently).
So for now, I will have to cancel the orders and relist the items so that my buyer can buy them safely and I can send them with insurance.
Hope this helps others - in any doubt, request a call back from eBay CS, they are very helpful I found.
I also mentioned that eBay should try to enhance the AI system by issuing a warning if one tries to list an item with 'gold' or 'silver' in the title but under a category that doesn't reflect the valuable metal.
Anyway, I hope this helps.
Have a lovely day everyone!

That's very useful, thank you. As long as the opting out works in practice!

Yes! I haven't tried to relist yet as my buyer wants me to relist tomorrow afternoon so she can be online to buy the items 🙂 I might be back on here if it's not so smooth.... hahaha
Have a lovely day!

In practice, what you have been told doesn't work.
I used this title: '18 carat gold, diamond and pearl necklace' in Fine Jewellery with a starting price of £500 (not a real listing) and still got this message. 'Simple Delivery will override your domestic postage policy.'.

The plot thickens.
I just tried to relist one of the items and whatever category I try to use, I can't opt out of Simple Delivery - so I made another call to eBay and this time I got hold of another lady who told me the opposite of what I was told yesterday - I have to use Simple Delivery and eBay guarantees that if anything goes wrong in the mail, they will reimburse the buyer and I keep the money. Really??? we no longer deal with Royal Mail?
I am really not comfortable with that - so I asked for a personalised email from eBay (not one of those cut/paste from the help pages) guaranteeing that I am insured if I use Simple Delivery. Still, I'm not sure I'm going to use eBay to sell the charms I have left from my years of trading...
Has anyone had the issue? lost a gold item in the mail and got reimbursed by eBay?
Thanks everyone!
Have a good day.

Hi again. in general ebay refund the buyer for lost or damaged SD items and seller keeps payment but jewellery/gold is on their "not covered" list so that's unlikely. It's probably not the best place for selling jewellery now. 😞
