Buyers' protection won't apply - it covers some very specific things - in any case, you need 'seller protection' which is very limited on Ebay.

Perfumes are not eligible for Simple Delivery.

So, if you think you are being scammed, you should file a report with 'Report Fraud'.  They will give you a number for your report and you can then contact Ebay, explain what you think has happened, give them your report number and ask them to step in and close the claim in your favour.

Also report the buyer using Ebay's 'report buyer' link for abusing the Money Back Guarantee.

You may not get anywhere with Ebay but if this was a brand new account, or a buyer with a history of making such claims, Ebay might listen and take your side.

You are a Private seller, did you not use a Simple Delivery label?

Under SD rules if the buyer opens a case for item damaged in transit , eBay pick up the refund,  they pay the buyer , and you get to keep the payout.

Yes, it does sound dodgy what was actually returned, but no matter, if it was claimed damaged in transit and SD used, you do not pay the refund.  Or, did the buyer open a case for item not as described?

If Simple Delivery was used contact eBay Customer Services ask why you paid the refund, when they should have covered this cost.

I strongly recommend contacting CS 8 a.m. on a weekday when the lines open for ' live agents' as then, there's more chance of Dublin answering.

This is the easiest and quickest way to contact eBay Customer Services, for a Call Back option.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/eua?id=5275&mkevt=1&mkpid

Lines open 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. on weekdays

9 a.m. - 6 p.m. on weekends.

Automated agents will be available on chat outside of the above hours.

It's not easy to get through to CS, you just have to have perseverance! Instead of a quick option, 'Contact Us' which put you direct to a CS agent, you have to scroll past ' How Can We Help you today, to the very bottom and click on the Contact Us below Need More Help?

That takes you to an annoying AI bot but if you persevere keep asking questions it cannot answer and Insist on an agent, they do finally put you through and say .... waiting time ** minutes!

The reality for sellers is that eBay decides cases without ever seeing the item concerned. They have admitted that this sometimes means they are sometimes unable to establish "who has the valid case".

Your perfume was a classic example. The box was battered and had already been opened. If the bottle was empty, no-one but you and the buyer knows whether it was empty when sold, or only when returned.

Unfortunately for sellers, it's clear from experence that eBay's default policy is to find disputed cases in favour of the buyer. This is why we often warn sellers that eBay's money back guarantee is hugely weighted against them.

It's not hard to see the reasons. If a buyer had a genuine case that eBay turned down, they could take eBay to court for not honouring the money back guarantee. eBay doesn't offer any such guarantee to sellers, so the easy and safe answer is to support the buyer and equire the seller refund them. It makes sense, really - for eBay!

By the way, the further bad news news is that if the buyer reports the "false positive" feedback you left to call them a scammer eBay will remove it, and penalise you for feedback policy violation. Buyers can leave bad feedback for sellers, but sellers are only allowed to leave positive feedback and positive comments for buyers. Mentioning any problems with a buyer is not allowed. As I said, the rules are often weighted in the buyer's favour.

There is no negative button to press when leaving feedback for buyers.

daft that though isn't it why ask u to leave feedback if u can only leave
it if its positive people should be able to leave feedback whatever it may
be negative or positive but ebay only let u leave the positive i guess
