Offering a freebie with an item for sale.

Selling a few items from boating days.  Also have a few small bits that could be useful to boaters, but can't even give them away.  Has anyone ever offered a freebie to send with a purchased item?  Would such an idea work.  My thoughts were to let buyer select from the free list and include it at no extra charge with the bought item.  Hate the thought of them going to landfill.  Any thoughts or suggestions will be welcome.

eBay don't allow that, your listing must be for the actual item(s) depicted in the photo and listing description.

Years ago someone told the story of how they popped a free item in with the sold one and got negative feedback because the freebie wasn't in great condition so it's not something I'd do.

Best stop at a charity shop and see if they can make use of the items.
