Missing item

I sold a pair of trainers almost a month ago, dropped them in YODEL drop off box (I have a receipt confirming I sent the item) but the item "disappeared" overnight and was never dispatched - so after weeks of going back and forth I had to give the buyer a refund (rightly so, they were excellent so my issue is not with the buyer at all as they never got what they had initially paid for).  YODEL doesnt want to know, the BP station where the drop off box is doesnt want to know, and ebay doesnt want to know, so now I am out of pocket as I have lost the item.  Has anybody else experienced this and has any advice? I am out of options
