Had the max bid on an auction but the item webt to a lower bidder. why?

How is it possible that I have the highest maximum bid, but the item finally goes to somebody who had a lesser bid? I lost out on the item and the seller lost out on the best price. See images attached.

With different amount of bids being shown and seen, depending on whether you are buyer or seller, it is a shame ebay has dreamt up this silly situation.
