Good afternoon,
i'm new to selling and I was hoping someone could clear something up for me.
I've just sold an item which I have been paid for. eBay has taken the postage money for themselves. I understand they print the label for me, but I wanted at least some of that money to cover the costs of packaging the item.
if this is how it works, then I will have to price my items slightly higher to cover packaging?

You just add it into your overall price. If for example you were selling at £10 + £5 postage you'd list at £15. If it's auction then increase staring price.
It's not "free" of course it's "included"
I did once buy from someone who thought that "post free" meant he did not have to put on a stamp [it was a rare "Almond Mars Bar" and long ago!] Royal Mail delayed it till I paid!
You can still also buy a label to stick on yourself on the RM website. I prefer the PO as they weigh it and if they get it wrong it's down to them

One way to do it is to sell "post free" with any charges included. You either buy postage on RM website or - better - at the Post Office

Thanks for your reply. If I'm understanding you correctly, I list the item for free postage and go to the post office to weigh, package and send the item. How do I charge for postage to the seller if I'm listing it for free?

As a private seller, there are no fees, unless you add an extra when listing, e.g. reserve.
Buyer pays you for item & postage as listed.
You use this this money to buy postage yourself.
As said, if you do freepost, you just add postage cost to start price.
