When ebay refund before return you don't usually have to send the item back. If the seller wants it back they should supply a paid-for postage label upfront. If not you can get rid of it however you like.

They disputed the return and haven’t supplied a returns label before I raised the return. Just wish I could have a definitive article confirming this one way or another

The bottom line is without a return postage label you don't have to send the item back. eBay refund without return when sellers dispute a "Not as described" case and they don't expect the buyer to return the item. Personally I would offer to return if the seller sends a label but you don't have to do that if you prefer not to contact them again.
