Debt collection agency

Hi

Has anyone on here been contacted by a Debt collection agency on behalf of eBay regarding and outstanding debt.
why I ask is my wife has just received an email notifying her eBay has employed a debt collection agency regarding a debt on her account run up by a hacker, who gained access to her account in June 2022 and sold a fictitious item. Needles to say someone 'bought' the item which of course didn't exist.
Any way over the last two years or so we have been back and forth with eBay over this. They say they will deal with it, and to cut a long story short, it hasn't been.
We have now got to the debt collection agency stage.
I have spoken to the Debt Collection agency and informed them we are disputing the debt and they informed me they are going back to eBay and see what they say.
To me it's obvious eBay will tell them we owe the debt considering it's got this far, has anyone got to this stage , if so I would be grateful if they could share their experience, good or bad which might help us fight this.

Assuming that the amount claimed is worthwhile the simple answer is to go to court.

Write to eBay and to the debt collection agency and tell them to cease action save issuing a writ for court.

Then go to court when summoned.  Put together a bundle of all the documentation in chronological order with every thing that eBay has said.  It must all - of course - be in writing.   You can [if I recall] request that the court transfers the hearing to a venue near you.  It will usually be heard in what is often referred to as the "small claims court" where costs are not usually awarded unless one of the parties has "behaved disgarcefully".    @marksimon3081
