Customs unannounced

I bought something for 155 quid knowing I only have that much and now I’m told I will not get my packaged unless I come up with 40 pounds why am I not told this at checkout and if I return the parcel I don’t have the money for return and then I also lose all my money for sipping in the first place 

I can’t contact eBay in any way and this is a scam

Was this from non UK seller? 

If so probably import fees.

If you don't pay them, you invalidate ebay MBG.

It's not a scam, it's legally due import costs.  Items under £135 have these costs added at checkout by ebay,  over that amount and they are charged directly to the buyer when the items arrive in the country.

Although you didn't notice it there would have been a warning on the listing.

If you don't pay the extra you won't get the item and ebay won't help you get a refund of what you paid already.
