Counter offer confusion

Hi, I am a private seller.  Yesterday I received an offer on an item I had for sale which I declined and replied with a counter offer.   The buyer obviously accepted my counter offer as Ebay confirmed that payment at that price had been made by the same buyer and sent me all the usual post it now etc info.  Today I received an email from Ebay saying that unfortunately the counter offer had expired without a sale.  I don't understand this.  Is it another Ebay glitch and has anyone else experienced it?    Thanks.

I think you will just have to take more notice of what shows in your sold items.  Has buyer paid? I see you say paid, so just check the usual details.

Just check to see if item has moved into unsolds, and if sold and paid for delete from unsold.

So many of advices sent seem to be systems that have a mind of their own, and if you can see they are incorrect ignore them.
