I have tried to message a seller but it won't send my message to them. The screen changes as if it is going to send it, but it never finishes.
This seller is only doing collection for their item, so I am trying to find out what might be arranged if I purchase it. Until I can get their answer there is no point in buying the item, as I will have to travel 5 hours ( for a return journey) by bus to get to their location.
Say that they work nights: They wouldn't necessarily be able to meet me during the day, which is when it would be best for me to do this. So I really need to contact them first, but it just won't send the message. The "customer contact" for ebay isn't able to handle answering this and just sends me around in the same circle.

Ebay will not allow contact details to be exchanged before items are paid for,
What ebay expects you to do is: Pay for the item and then you can exchange details.
Make your arrangements to view/collect the item.
If there are any problems either before or after viewing you ask seller to cancel. Your seller should do this but just to make sure your money is safeguarded, f your seller refuses to cancel open an Item not received case after one week to get your money back.

Hi, thanks for replying.
I have contacted other sellers without issue, as I have needed to verify details about what they are selling. In this case I need to ask them about the "possible" arrangements, because they are collection only and it would require quite a lot of effort to sort it out.
I don't want to buy their item and then find that I can't make those arrangements with them, because then I have to request a refund. If ebay won't guarantee that refund, well, that's not good when I could just simply ask the seller if it is doable in the first place.
Presumably ebay doesn't allow this communication when it is collection only (?) but if so, why even make it possible to put that as a possibility if you can't check with the seller?

Those are just the rules of the site.
Bear in mind as well that most sellers want a nice, straightforward sale with a local buyer - that is why they are selling 'collection only'.
