Bid history/timing/highest anomaly

I recently got pipped for item 226925699133. Nothing unusual there - happens all the time..

But in the bid history, the winners bid was placed 2 hours before close of the auction, but they were never the highest/winning bidder. 

I'm not suggesting they did anything wrong, I just thought I understood how it all fitted together, and now I'm not so sure...

Grateful if anyone knows how that works - and also how I can do it myself - looks handy.

They placed that bid earlier than two other bidders - see the screenshot below.

That bid would not come into play until it was beaten by a higher bid.
