Accepted a return out of goodwill despite no refunds, does ebay refund original postage label to me?
It was a polite request due to a non fitting item but I've seen the refund amount is the entire amount minus the buyer protection fee. As I've already been charged the orginal £3.45 postage label to my account - does this mean I won't get refunded that?? Thanks in advance for any advice.

When you accept a return, you repay the entire amount the buyer paid you - so item cost plus postage.
Ebay will just refund the BPF to the buyer, they have no obligation to refund you the postage you paid out.

If I buy an item from any other online store and then return it I will be out of pocket for both postage costs
No, you won't. For all eBay returns, whatever the reason and whether a business or private seller, the seller must always refund the full price including delivery.
This is a requirement of the consumer contract regs for all UK registered online business sellers. eBay also applies the same to private selllers.
The buyer is responsible for the cost of return postage - unless the item is not as described, in which case the seller pays. Or unless the seller offers free returns, which not many seem to do on eBay.
