I got this from a non-seller (auction ended, they cancelled the sale without warning, apologised for that policy breach, then relisted the item at a much higher price) for whom I left polite but negative feedback.

Is there anyting I can or should do to prevent this?

Sellers cannot send negative feedback. If they send you a green spot with negative comments contact eBay to get them removed.

Your feedback does not breach eBay's rules.  The good news is that if the seller cancelled the sale without your consent they will get a defect.
