eBay reference number incorporated into address of buyer

Why is there now an eBay number incorporated into the address of your buyer?

And is it necessary to write it on the address label?

It says "The unique eBay code will not be printed as part of the address on the postage label."   So if you write/print your own labels you can leave it out.
