The rules for buyer protection when items that are sold for collection are complicated, which is why you should read eBay's money back guarantee policy for yourself, not just asked other members.

It's all explained here: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/money-back-guarantee.html

Bear in mind that sellers too are worried about protection. Things have become even more complicated since eBay prevented buyers from viewing before bidding, to prevent buyers and sellers from making a private sale to evade payment of eBay's fees.

The common sense answer for both parties is for the buyer to pay in cash after inspecting the item, and for the seller and buyer to agree a cancellation if the buyer isn't happy with the item.

It is so much better to pay by cash.  You can look at the item and if unhappy walk away.

depending on the item - if you pay cash, no protection, pay other ways, maybe protected.
