cancelling a bid within 12 hours of auction end

I have been notified by a prospective buyer of an major mistake in a listing which has already attracted a bid.

I cannot cancel the bid , nor amend the listing because auction only has 11 hours to run.

I have e-mailed the first bidder and asked him to retract so that I may end the auction by removing the item from sale.

Is there anything else I could have done?

you can cancel the bids, you just can't cancel the listing,
