how come i bought an item which was posted from london uk yet vat was added which i never noticed on paypal payout

why does ebay not tell people on the advert that vat will apply at check out

i rang ebay to be the the seller has stock in the uk but business is resisted in china so vat applies so if i went to marks and spencer why is not added at the till it's selling in the uk i know vat applies here but no uk shop states vat to be added so why is ebay not stating vat to be added who looks at the sellers business address when it states posted from london

Starting 1 January 2021, eBay is required to collect VAT on certain orders delivered to UK addresses:

  • Orders up to £135 sent from outside the UK
  • Orders where the item is located in the UK, but the seller is not a UK seller

You'll see the VAT included in your order total at checkout, and you can view and download a tax invoice from the Order details page in your Purchase history.
