Why is my payment marked pending?

Yesterday I bought 2 items from the same seller.   I requested a new invoice in the hopes that they would combine postage.   I don't think they understood what I meant, as I then received an invoice for the 2 items together but with no reduction in the p&p price.  It wasn't worth quibbling about, so I paid the whole invoice with Paypal. 

I checked today to see if items had been posted and notice that my payments on both items were marked "pending".

The other odd thing is that when Ebay confirmed that I had bought the items, the email began "Thanks for making your first purchase with Ebay".  It's very far from being my first purchase, so as a precaution I changed my password. 

I am not sure what is going on here, but the seller mentioned in a note that it was the first time they had sold anything on  Ebay, so it could be something that they have done that has caused confusion.
