Why date of birth required?

On what basis do ebay need to know its customers date of birth?  I object to providing this, especially as there is no legitimate explanation given in their new t&c.  The "this information is required " is BS.

One entirely sensible reason why eBay requires members' dates of birth is that that members have to be 18 years old to join. Another is that DoB is standard data when checking identity or creditworthiness, which the user agreement allows eBay to do.

It's noticeable that almost all the grumbling about providing a bank account number and other information is coming from private sellers. Don't imagine it will trouble eBay if some go. In fact, they will probably welcome it. EBay sees its future as a business orientated portal to rival Amazon.

Yes, good point. I hadn't thought about the potential competition with
Amazon. I suspect you are right. As a v small private seller Ebay couldn't
give 2 hoots if I stay or go; which is reciprocal.
