When the buyer doesn’t accept payment…..

I bought a large chinese carpet.....had several online chats with seller regarding using courier for collection prior to end of sale.  Contacted buyer at end of auction to say I had been unable to process payment to him as there appeared to be a issue with payment link.  He replied 'Ah yes...I need to update a few things; will email you when I've done that".  Despite numerous requests to seller for update I have not heard from him and now ebay are saying they are going to cancel the sale.  I find this whole experience very odd; why go to the bother of listing something and then not have your payment details set up?  Also worried that my non-payment will reflect badly on my ebay track record.
