Hello, I have recently bought an item from a seller on ebay who is Vat registered. The total amount I paid was £94.99. I requested a Vat Receipt and was sent one by the seller but it stated no Vat was paid. When I contacted the seller assuming they had made a mistake:
"I have received the Vat Invoice thank you but it doesn't show any Vat has been charged.
The invoice you sent over has a total of £82.49 but the cost of the item was £94.99.
Could you correct this and send it over."
they replied with the following:
"We have received the amount which is on the invoice. Ebay automatically takes this money when the purchase is under 135 pounds. That's why we need to write 0% VAT. If the purchase is over 135 pounds then we write 20 % and eBay doesn't take VAT. The seller needs to deal with UK VAT.
If you want you can also ask eBay assistants for clarification regarding this matter."
Could someone advise me what this means?
Thanks,
Dan
Perhaps this may explain it
Starting 1 January 2021, eBay is required to collect VAT on certain orders delivered to UK addresses:
You'll see the VAT included in your order total at checkout, and you can view and download a tax invoice from the Order details page in your Purchase history.
On orders over £135 imported to the UK, the recipient may need to pay VAT as part of clearing the parcel through customs.
