Tracking numbers on untrackable mail.

Could anyone tell me why eBay attaches "tracking numbers" to postage items bought through eBay, like first & second class that you cannot track, it makes it very confusing for customers, who, if they do click on the "tracking number" & are taken to the box with the "tracking number" link & they click that they get to Royal Mail, all good so far but what a let down, it says "Tracking information is not available for this service", please, can anyone tell me why eBay would do such an idiotic thing?

It's blanket programming.

Their algorythms don't work that well as it is, imagine if they tried to tweak things such as you're suggesting.

Are you aware that you can 'track' parcels now even if you didn't purchase tracked/signed for postage?  Since about february time RM add a reference to a proof of postage receipt which when keyed into their track and trace webpage will provide confirmation when the package has been delivered.
