Seller has asked for a cancellation of an order

I haven't come across this before.  An item I was selling sold to a buyer who over the course of the auction bid 4 times - 2 of these bids on the day of the auction up to 1 hour before it ended.  Almost as soon as the auction closed eBay notified me of a request to cancel which I declined.  Having looked on eBay "Help" for what happens next, it appears that the seller may choose to pay and I would have to ship the item only for them to start a return.  Can this actually be the case or have I completely misunderstood?  I cannot believe that eBay would give more protection to a time waster than to an honest seller.
