You're supposed to wait to get the item back before you issue the refund. The buyer should have opened a return case at their end and when you accept it they automatically receive a link to print the return postage label. Now you've refunded ebay's system assumes you don't want the item back. See if the buyer is willing to return the item first and then you refund their postage.
