Purchased a CPU with Tracking No. but recieved a COVID letter with same tracking number instead.

Can someone please help with this enquiry and yes it is as strange as the subject heading infers...

On ther 12th July I purchased a BNIB Ryzen 9 5950X CPU.   Internal eBay tracking showed that the seller dropped "it" off at a Post Office on the 13th July with a est delivery of either the 15th July or Fri 16th July.  The following Signed For Tracking Number was also provided: (WM677872782GB).

So far everything seems great... EXCEPT...

Yesterday (14th July) I received a Signed For letter in the mail with the exact same tracking number as that of the supposed eBay item.  The letter was (of all things) a COVID "letter to the nation" message that the UK government was sending out to UK households.  😞  see inc pictures.

This is beyond baffling and while I am aware that, on occassion, Royal Mail will re-use tracking numbers from time to time, it does seem extremely unusual that the exact same tracking number would be used for the exact same person but for two completely unrelated things.

I have tried contacting the seller explaining the situation and asking them to double check the tracking number and assure me of an actual proper dispatch - however they have not replied.  I initially tried to make contact via eBay's "Not the Correct Item" service but that simply initiated a return item dispute ticket.

So I am kind of stuck at the moment and do not know how best to proceed as I am finding it extremely difficult to contact eBay and ask them to "Step In" as this is not an option with my open ticket - but at the moment in order for me to make progress with the open ticket and pressumably recieve my money back is to send the item back using eBays provided PrePaid packing slip.  What am I going to do - send back a COVID lockdown letter?

My dilemma is that technically I have received "something" from eBay (as far as matching Tracking Numbers go) BUT it was a letter as opposed to a Ryzen CPU at £639.  However there is also the arguement that specific "purchased item" has not been received.

If I close the "Not the Correct Item" ticket can I then select a different action like "Item Not Received"?  Or will I have just wasted an opportunity to put this right?

Things just don't add up:

  • The Seller has 100% feedback and is still trading but with very low ticket items.
  • The Seller "had" 2 of these CPU's and despite being the only buyer - the other one has gone.
  • The date/time and Tracking No. on both eBay and Royal Mail exactly matches the letter I received.
  • The letter itself is addressed to me but the door number is incorrect.
  • The return address on the envelope is to a postcode in Wales with nothing to do with the UK Government.

Can someone please assist - ideally I would love to try and contact eBay somehow and speak to them about this.
