After placing a bid on an item this message came up "You're the highest bidder and you're only 1 bid from letting it get away". Does this mean the item is mine if I bid again?

What it 'means' is that another bidder placing a bid your bid will no longer be the possible winning bid.

I have never heard of anyone getting this message before.

I imagine it means that one more bid will reach the reserve price.
