Lost auctions because no outbid emails

Recently I have lost two auctions as my maximum bid was outbid, but at no point did I receive any mails telling me that, or that the auction was approaching the end.

I thought it worked like this: place your maximum bid, recieve an email saying currently the highest bid (I did), then as the auction progresses you should get emails telling you when you have been outbid, and when the auction is close to ending - I didn't get any of those.

All I got was  "auction has ended and you were outbid..." emails.

What do I have to do to ensure I am kept informed of bidding?

Somewhere in your "My eBay" pages you will find the option to receive or not receive outbid notices.

But is it worth bothering? It doesn't matter how hard you try to keep on top of the bidding, you can still be outbid at the last moment with no time to reply. Many bidders intentionally bid in the closing seconds of an auction for this reason.

It's best to make your mind up what you're willing to pay, then bid the whole amount. EBay's automatic bidding system will keep on bidding on your behalf until you either win the auction, or reach your maximum. Then you would lose fairly to someone who was willing to pay more, which is what auctions are about.

Go to "My ebay" click on the "Account tab" then on "Site preferences" then scrolling down the page to "General preferences" where you will be able to edit/select the following:

Buying alerts on eBay pages

     before an item ends:
Watched item ending alert
Show an alert on eBay if my watched item is ending.
Outbid alerts
Show an alert on eBay if I have been outbid on items I am bidding.
Second Chance Offer received alert
Show an alert on eBay when I receive a Second Chance offer.
