Has your buyer opened a case under eBay's money back guarantee?

If so, you need to reply to the case. Phoning eBay is pointless, even if you can get through to them, which is becoming almost impossible as they're on a reduced service. In any case, they would probably just reassure you, and then do exactly the opposite.

We normally advise sellers not to even think of contesting SNAD cases. EBay never sees the item and takes the buyer's word against the seller's, so the result is a foregone conclusion. If a seller contests the case, and loses, eBay penalises them by placing a defect on their account, and the seller also forfeits and return of fees.

In your case, if the buyer's message confirm what you've told us: that he doesn't want them as they are a uk 9 and he is an 8.5 so they don't fit, if eBay deals with the case fairly you should win if you point this out. The shoes were clearly described as size 9, and this was confirmed by the label on the box. The buyer obviously took a chance that they would fit, and now wants a return because they didn't.

Good luck, but eBay so seldom finds in the seller's favour that they may rubber-stamp the case almost automatically to refund the buyer. This may sound a bit cynical, but eBay is so institutionally biased in favour of buyers that nothing would surprise us.
