Hi all
I think I have just been scammed - two buyers came to pick up my old car which they had bid on successfully, to pay cash .They asked to test drive it and there was white smoke coming out of the engine which they said was a broken head gasket which would cost over £1000 to fix , also there was oil in the coolant .They said they were mechanics and would buy it for parts, and like a mug I sold it to them for a fraction of the asking price. To make things worth I had a hunch things weren't right, as the buyer had no ebay ratings (but then everyone has to start somewhere as has been said on more than one ebay forum), and the car has alwasy been a good runner.
Having checked online I find out this is a well known scam where one distracts you and the other looks under the bonnet and squits oil into the coolant. I am not a mechanic so can't see how I could have known..but still , it leaves more than a nasty taste in the mouth

I've called ebay and explained, and they have told me to cancel the sale, but I am still, to put it mildy , fuming...

Even eBay has given you absurd advice. If you cancel the sale you will be required to refund their payment!
I don't believe for one minute that eBay has agreed to waive your fees. These will be charged on the price agreed in the sale, and won't be reduced because you sold the car for less.
I'm afraid you will just have to accept that you've been well and truly conned.
