Faulty item... seller wants me to pay return item or pay to get it fixed?

I bought a second hand Mac computer. It arrived and when I switched it in..? It made the start up noise (it’s an iMac), but apart from that..? No sign of life.
Spoke with the seller. He seems a genuine, lovely old fella. But he was kind of saying... ‘I don’t give refunds’... which has now changed to ‘ I’ll give a refund but you are responsible for paying for postage’.... I’m getting a diagnostic check on it from a Mac store tomorrow. He said he’d ‘pay a little toward it if it’s a cheap fix’.

I paid the going rate for the computer... it’s not a new one, it’s 2011. I honestly don’t have a penny more to fix it OR pay return postage. I’m trying to keep things civil and with no drama. But I would have thought that if I’ve paid for a working computer..? I shouldn’t really be paying to get it fixed OR return postage. The item arrived well packaged, in its original packaging plus another well fitting brown box... but nowhere did he write ‘fragile’ or indicate which way up it was supposed to be.

I dint know where I stand legally with this... but I’m utterly broke. Without a working computer 😩
Anyone know where I stand legally here..??? I’d appreciate it very much. And I don’t want to get into anything messy. He seems genuinely really upset and stressed about the issue... HELP! What do I do..??? Even if it’s a cheap fix..? I doubt I’ll be able to afford it tbh. Unless it costs under a tenner ! 😪

Such a long question, when all you had to do was look at eBay's money back guarantee. You've been a member for 17 years, have you never noticed that there's a link to it at the top of every listing?

When you receive an item that doesn't match the description you need to open a case under eBay's money back guarantee. You do this through the resolution centre: http://resolutioncentre.ebay.co.uk/

A case must be opened within 30 days after the actual or latest estimated delivery date. If the seller wants the item to be returned, eBay will enable them to send you a prepaid return label (this only applies if the item was located in the UK). After 8 days the option will appear to escalate the case for eBay to step in. If still unresolved, escalate it, and don't agree to close the case before you have your refund.

For full details of eBay's money back guarantee see: http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/money-back-guarantee.html

Don't allow anyone to check it or mess with it.

Under ebay's money back guarantee you are entitled to a full refund and the seller has to pay for the return postage cost.

Take a look at ebay's money back guarantee and open a not as described case.
