Faulty goods but seller no longer a registered user

I purchased some Brita Maxtra water filter cartridges in September last year and have just opened the box to use them. After trying one I've found them to be defective and possible fakes but the seller is no longer a registered seller. Advice required please as none of the usual articles on eBay cover this scenario and the seller is not contactable.

There is nothing at all you can do on ebay or paypal if you paid that way.

You had 30 days to open a dispute on ebay and 180 days on paypal
