Firstly, eBay scans every message between members for attempts to provide contact details. This is not allowed, to prevent members from arranging private deals to evade payment of eBay's fees. It could mean an autometic 7 day suspension.
Secondly, scammers often try to get members to reveal the email address they use for PayPal. This can be used later to send fake messages "from PayPal".
There is no legitimate reason to request a member's email address.
