Recently bought a used nail gun for a proposed home shed build - listed as 'good working order'. Arrived no problem but when I came to use it it wouldnt fire at all. I took it to a local repair place and they said it needed a new 'driver' which was a part no longer available. So requested a return, as it was defective, under the ebay money back guarantee, even though the seller stated didnt give refunds I believe I am covered(?)Next day the return is closed, no clarification received, and seems I have no right of appeal. How can I now pursue this?

A return request and a money back guarantee case are completely different. Which did you open?
My guess is that it was an ordonary return request, which the seller was entitled to refuse if they don't accept returns. The seller could not close a money back guarantee case, which as its name implies, would have guaranteed you a refund. If necessary, eBay would have enforced it.
You can't open another case through eBay now. If you paid by PayPal, file a dispute under their 180 day buyer protection policy.
